How to Clean & Restore Your Engraved Slate Coasters
Slate is a fantastic material for home décor—it’s heat-resistant, naturally non-slip, and looks incredibly stylish when laser-engraved. Whether you have our personalised coasters or a slate cheese board, a little maintenance goes a long way.
Because slate is a natural stone, it can sometimes show water marks or look "chalky" over time. Here is how to keep it looking brand new.
Daily Cleaning
Slate is low maintenance. For everyday cleaning:
-
Wipe down with a damp cloth and warm water.
-
Use a mild washing-up liquid if there are sticky spills.
-
Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scouring pads, as these can scratch the surface.
How to Remove Water Marks & Rings
If glasses have left rings on your coasters, don’t worry—they aren't permanent.
-
Wash the coaster with warm soapy water.
-
Let it air dry completely.
-
If the mark persists, a drop of mineral oil (or even olive oil in a pinch) rubbed into the surface will blend it away.
restoring the "Dark Wet Look"
Over time, slate can look a bit pale or grey. To bring back that deep, rich charcoal colour and make your engraving pop:
-
Apply a tiny amount of food-safe mineral oil or slate oil to a soft cloth.
-
Rub it evenly over the entire surface (edges too!).
-
Buff off any excess with a clean, dry cloth.
This simple trick hides light scratches and protects the stone from future stains!
